Reports from the Summer League Semi-Finals
The gents league team reached the final of the Edinburgh Summer Golf League for the first time in 18 years but not before a nervous finally.
The semi was played at Silverknowes against a strong Musselburgh team who had only lost 2 games in the group stages. Not surprisingly it was close throughout. Excellent wins by Mark Riddell, Matt Kaye, Brent Munro and Stephen Marshall and a half from Sandy Robert put us 4.5 to 2.5 in front with 2 games on the course. Unfortunately Andy Laurence and Tom Cannon came up just short loosing their games on the last hole.
The match was tied so the halved game went to extra holes. Enter Sandy Robert. The 19th 20th and 21st holes were halved in par before Sandy delivered the win with a birdie at the 22nd. He followed 2 great shots with a beautifully judged curling down hill putt that was met with a mixture of cheers and relief from his watching team mates.
Sandy played brilliant golf during the extra holes despite admitting to being somewhat nervous. In fact he later said the only time he wasn’t shaking was over the ball.
The final is against Mortonhall at Turnhouse on 17th September 11am first tee time. The guys have done remarkably well to get to the final and it would be great to see a strong support at Turnhouse.
The Juniors lost a close contest by 3.5 matches to 2.5 matches against a strong Craigmillar Park Side at Kingsknowe. After Jake Edgcombe and Ramsay McCall lost in the first two matches, wins from Murray Cannon and Kier Hislop tied the match up at 2-2. The last two games were very close both finishing on the last green with Ella Marshall losing by one hole and Fraser Sayers ending up all square.
A great effort by the Junior squad this year.
